OVER THE VAULT PA SYSTEM: YOUR OVERSEER

[[OOC: This broadcast goes out over the Vault’s old speaker system and can be heard in every room in the Vault. Those that chose to tune to the radio station advertised will hear this announcement on loop for the next week at a better sound quality than offered through the damaged speaker system.]]

[The voice that comes over the speaker system is familiar to some of you. For the rest, it is a crisp, solidly non-descript American accent that carries the weight of someone used to unquestioning obedience to his orders.]

Attention Vault 66, this is your Overseer speaking. You may refer to me as Captain Simmons or Overseer. All dwellers are instructed to tune their pip-boys to the Overseer Announcement frequency at least once per day to receive my announcements.

After analyzing reports from the long-term staff, I have authorized three exploratory groups to spend no more than one week each on the surface for reconnaissance. Priorities are: threat assessment of radiation level and local wildlife; gathering of food samples for analysis; and detection of sentient life. Contact with any potential sentients is not approved at this time.

Three team leads have been selected: Zhao Yunlan, Takagi Saya, and, based on personal recommendation, Chocolat Misu.

[There is a small pause and anyone listening closely can hear him mutter ‘Nicholas, if that name was a joke…’ Then he clears his ‘throat.’]

Leads may select a small team of one to three to accompany them. For Vault security, no less than two dwellers may be in the Vault at any one time. Robotic staff will not be included in these missions. Appropriate arms will be checked out upon mission start and returned upon completion.

"You earned it. Don't make me regret it."

The bones in the corner of the office are gone now, the rug straightened back out as if nothing had been there. The empty bottles of alcohol are gone, as well. All in all, the place looks more ship shape than the last time she was in the office.

"I'll do my best to live up to your trust," Yunlan proclaims, straight-faced. "Hey, it's looking much nicer in here!"

Fewer corpses! That was a plus. He props his hand on his hip, glancing around. "No, I just dropped by to ask some logistics questions. Like, what kind of weaponry and supplies do you have available? I want to make sure my team's got people who know what they're doing with what I'm gonna hand them."

"Fine idea. You'll have access to basic fire arms, .44s or 10mms pistols, and some combat rifles. Mind we have limited ammunition at the moment, you'll need to use those wisely. Combat knives and stun batons are another option."

He floats over towards Yunlan.

"We don't have much to spare for firearms training. Think your men can handle it?"

"Well, I've got a few people with firearms skills -- sounds like we ought to get everybody one of the melee weapons to save on ammo, too." He rubs his chin thoughtfully, and doesn't correct Simmons on the 'men' part. Old-fashioned robots, huh.

"Anything on the survival side of thing? Climbing rope, canteens, backpacks?"

"Of course. You'll get the basic survival gear and MRIs. Should last the better part of a week. I'd bring radiation suits, but you're heading the mission. It's at your discretion."

He'd already almost forcibly taken some of Charlotte's medical supplies to send up with them. The woman wasn't great at letting go, but Simmons wasn't a gossiping robot.

"What kind of intel do you have about the radiation levels up top?" Yunlan inquired. "Even if it's old, we ought to be able to--" He circled one hand in the air. "--calculate some ranges! Based on how long it takes to break down."

Or something like that. He'd never expected to wish he'd paid more attention in high school physics class, but here they were! About all he knew was if the Geiger counter chattered you went the other way.

"No outside readings. When the Vault sealed, all contact with the outside world was cut. Nothing to even hint we're down here."

He sounds oddly proud of that, despite the fact totally cutting themselves off from the surface was, in hindsight, likely a bad plan.

"Mission plan was Vault-Tec would update us when it was safe. But there's been nothing from HQ. Guessing the damn Red's took them out."

"No sensors or anything, huh?" Yunlan grimaced. Well, it was what he'd expected, but still a shame. "Anything could've happened to them. Hell, look at what happened down here. Guess we'll plan on taking the suits -- you don't have any repair handbooks for 'em, do you? Some of the ones I saw downstairs weren't in good shape."

"The staff should be familiar," it would be hard for him to emphasize that kind of task is beneath him without holding up a sign. "Check in with them for any supply gaps. Have you started assembling your team?"

Yunlan sighed, only a little melodramatic; it seemed he'd have to deal with Nick on that subject.

"Will do, sir. I have two people in mind but I'll have to confirm with them before I name any names."

He shoots Simmons a friendly, conspiratorial smile, then pulls himself up to a more formal posture and salutes.

"Much appreciated. I'll check in with you when I've got the roster and a planned departure date."
